New Mormon Books

Julie is very good at writing suspense. I read this book rather quickly because I had to see if everyone made it out alive. I felt the book had a good ending, though some people have a thing against a “Happy Ever After” type ending. Personally, I don’t mind reading a happy ending once in awhile. I have had too much reality in my own life lately and like to be taken away to a happy place when I read.

It’s always interesting to read the backliner for the first time and see how your publisher describes your book, what they chose to emphasize, and how they provide a hook for the story without giving too much away. I’m pleased with this backliner (and not just because they said nice things about me).

The author’s spare style keeps the action moving at a rapid pace, but doesn’t leave the reader feeling like the plot isn’t developed well enough. Mystery and suspense readers of any age or gender will love this one.

Waddell’s sequel to 2008’s The Blood Detective, which introduced Nigel Barnes, a genealogist employed by Scotland Yard, offers an overly similar plot. Unfortunately, too many coincidences and a far-fetched motive for the crimes make this a less successful effort than its predecessor.

The book hooked me from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. I had to see how the hero and heroine would get together… I was coming close to the end, with maybe ten pages left and I seriously wondered to myself, “how is she going to wrap this up in such a short time.” The answer was, she didn’t… Betsy Brannon Green had become a cliffhanger writer and I didn’t like it.
