  • Excerpt: Eugene England’s “Reconversion” to the Book of Mormon

Bloggernacle, Doctrine, Uncategorized 29.06.2009 No Comments

I had my “reconversion” to the Book of Mormon (to use the word I have chosen for the experiences of life-long Mormons) when I was a missionary in Hawaii in 1956. Yes, I had read the book and studied passages for talks, but I had not been brought to Christ by it.

David Ebershoff takes two distinct narratives, adds faux-historical documents, letters, and Wikipedia entries, and comes up with a completely engrossing look at the history of polygamy in America. This is a case of a hugely ambitious idea - multiple narrators, different time periods, the blending of history and fiction - that absolutely gets it right. I was grabbed by the first page, and by the end of the 500+ page novel didn’t want it to end.

  • FLDS Memoir Tells of Shattered Dreams

    Uncategorized 25.05.2009 No Comments

In 1953, 16-year-old Irene became the second wife of her half-sister’s husband, who eventually married eight more women. Raised in a fundamentalist Mormon community, Irene saw nothing unusual about her situation. But after 28 years, wanting more, she left, and eventually entered into a monogamous marriage. For an honest account of a culture that is often sensationalized, read this memoir.

The book is broken into 12 chapters, each dealing with a different subject, ranging from historical events such as the Mountain Meadows Massacre and the Mormon handcart disaster, to colorful characters of the Old West like the storied, tough-as-nails trapper Jedediah Smith and the infamous, but lovable, outlaw Butch Cassidy.

Vestal McIntyre centers his first novel in and around the small, seemingly idyllic town of Eula, Idaho, where all daily life appears to be an open secret.

The time is the mid-1980s. Dominated by the Mormon Church, the family is the major emphasis in the small town of Eula. This presents a difficult situation for Lina and Connie, two single mothers who live in the trailer park and sometimes entertain men.

  • World Ward Cookbook Contains Prophets Recipes

    Uncategorized 24.05.2009 No Comments

    News:

LDS church members from 46 countries around the world submitted a total of 440 recipes to the Worldwide Ward Cookbook released last year, but most people don’t know the book contains an additional “Prophets” section.

Holly Farnsworth of Fort Duchesne put the collection of prophets’ favorite recipes together.

“We’ve had them for quite a while,” Farnsworth said. “My girls were in Young Women and they were doing an activity on different prophets and one of the things they did was make the recipes and let the girls taste them. It was a more engaging way to learn the history of the prophets.”

    Review:

Games and Activities for LDS Girls by Jenna Mitchell and Illustrated by Rebecca Miller is one book that can be judged by its cover. With bright funky colors and cute pictures, this is a book whose packaging definitely sells. Moms and daughters alike will pick the book up because of its fun look. If they take the time to really look inside, they will continue holding it because of the content.

  • Review of Echos from Eternity

    Uncategorized 03.12.2008 No Comments

It is about Near Death Experiences, NDEs. I do believe in them, I think they happen, but analysing them seems a bit self-fulfilling.
    …
It was interesting, there are some very cool stories in it. Of course a lot of times these stories feel like either something that should be told around the campfire or are so personal maybe they shouldn’t be in an open format at all. I know if I had this kind of experience I wouldn’t put it out where anyone could see it, pearls before swine and all that.
